The idea of structuring a surface through alternating squares in stark contrast to each other does not need to stop at the classic checkerboard. Indeed, from there the variations are plentiful: Lesser contrast may be used, some squares may overlap or blend into each other, there may be more than two square elements introduced and lastly, the all-time favourite of ornamentists - filling with foliage.
